Back pain is very individual; not everyone will experience it in the same way. It can be so different to the point where, while one person is feeling a sharp, stabbing ache; the other is only experiences a light cramp or stiffness in the back. Knowing that back pains are not fun for the individuals involved, you can use these simple strategies to help fight the pain you are experiencing.

When buying a mattress, make sure it is firm enough to prevent back pain. Most people would agree that a mattress which is too soft is not helpful for a back. While firm mattresses are the preferred type, it is possible that a mattress that’s too firm can also cause back pain. Finding the right mattress might mean trips to more than one mattress store. It’s important to find the right one though, so make sure you take the time to find one that is appropriate.

One way to lessen the pain of a backache is to lay in a position where your knees and hips are approximately at 90 degree angles to each other. This position is the most effect way to take unnecessary stress off of your joints. It is okay to experiment with positions that feel right to you, providing that your spine is not compromised by twisting it in any way.

To prevent unnecessary back pain, or even when you sit, retain good posture. Some people assume that you can only hurt your back if you overdo exercising. However, this isn’t true. The truth is, if you sit the wrong way, like when you are at the computer for long hours, that can cause ongoing damage to the muscles in your back.

If you get back injuries easily, through genetics or lifestyle choices, see a chiropractor regularly when you feel pain. A chiropractor will be able to notice what is wrong before you do, and fix it before it develops into something more serious.

A bad computer set-up is a very common cause of back problems. If you experience back pain while on your computer at work, check your keyboard and screen to ensure they are positioned properly, and your screen is at the same height as your eyes.

Don’t carry heavy loads exclusively on one side of your body. Instead, switch the arm you hold heavy objects with on a frequent basis. When you carry these things on only one side, it can produce more stress on the affected back muscles, which translates into more pain later in the day.
